asked on

group policy not applying - event id 107

So we went ahead and updated the group policy for My Docs redirect (so that this data is stored on SERVER 2 instead of SERVER 1). Plus we moved all of the My Docs data to SERVER 2.

Next I logged on as various user to test. For example I logged on as JSMITH on WORKSTATION A and confirmed that his My Docs is pathed to the correct location (which it was).

Couple of days later JSMITH logs in to the system but he logs on from WORKSTATION X. When he logs in on this workstation his My Docs is pointing to the old path (on SERVER 1). I restart WORKSTATION X and try logging on as JSMITH again and still same result (point to incorrect path on old server). However on WORKSTATION A we can still log in as JSMITH and it works correctly.

When I look at the event log on WORKSTATION X I see the following error...

EVENT ID 107 - Failed to perform redirection of folder My Documents. The folder is configured to be redirected from \\SERVER 1\JSMITH\MY DOCS to \\SERVER 2\JSMITH\MY DOCS. The following error occured: The directory name is invalid.

Shift-3 - I believe your advice did the trick. Thanks!

I kept JSMITH data on the new server and then I went back to SERVER 1 and recreated the old share (\\SERVER 1\JSMITH\MY DOCS) with no data inside of it. Even though the recreated old share had no data it seemed to do the trick for the group policy to apply correctly.

I am running some additional tests now to be 100% certain

Thankfully this only applies to a hand full of users so recreating (empty) old shares is not a big issue.

Shift-3,

Is there potential tweaks to the solution you offered?

Only reason I ask is because in some testing the My Docs for JSMITH pointed back to SERVER 1. Then I end up running GPUPDATE /FORCE and this action forces me to log off. When I log back on My Docs is pathed to the new server.

Is there anything I can do so that I don't have to run GPUPDATE /FORCE?

Wait a minute. My last post might be because of a bonehead move on my part. I accidentally removed the final portion of the path 'My Documents' and once I put it back it looks like it works consistenly.

Couple more tests and then I will close out this question. Thanks.
Excellent Fix.
Hi Guys,
I am having the same problem, and indeed changing the reg solved it, but I have PCs with 5-6 users logging in to it. Its going to be a pain changing the reg for each one. Is there an easier fix?

The weird thing it that it worked Sat when I rebuilt the server with Windows 2008 R2 AD. The old server is gone. so I cannot map the files to it. Its so weird! Today, Monday morning I had to go on all PCs and change the regedit.

I read somewhere that changing the default user will help, but it didnt do it for me so I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Thanks for your help.
