OpenVPN Missing Adapter
Hi There!

I have a fully patched XP Workstation and I am trying to install OPENVPN on it. It's had 3 different versions on there now trying to resolve this problem. It seems during the installation it will add an adapter and I can see it in connections (ncpa.cpl) but not in ipconfig. Ipconfig just shows the local area connection 1 and nothing else. I have tried delalltap.bat and addtap.bat but without any success. Anyone able to shed light, as I can't seem to make any connections with that problem apparent. I am presently using the latest version available today, and now there is a local area connection 7 with tap v9 installed in ncpa.cpl, but nothing showing in ipconfig and no way will it open a tunnel.

That does not answer my question.

Did you check whether TCP/IP is bound to the TAP interface?

just out of curiosity. have you setup your client.ovpn and started it using the openvpnm executable?

if you did that, please just enable logging. I believe you can set the log file and the log level (they are commented out on the standard client.ovpn file) set the log level to 6 and try to connect.

if there is any real problem, it most likely will appear in the log. you can then post the log here and we can help you better with that data

Regards

Yes TCPIP is bound.  Logs below.

Please check if you have all of those entries in RegEdit under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\:
  Control\Network\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\<GUID>\Connection
The name attribute should show "Local Area Connection 7". This <GUID> you should use for locating the other locations:
 Services\<GUID>\Parameters\Tcpip
(some TCP info, like IP addresses assigned)
 Services\Tcpip\Adapters\<GUID>
(link info to the following key)
 Services\Tcpip\Interfaces\<GUID>
(TCP info like in above Parameters\Tcpip)

I noticed that when I did another openvpn installation on another computer yesterday there was an option to hide the tap adapter, if that was set during the initial install, what is the processor unhiding it?

I can't remember ever having seen such a option to hide the adapter.

Qlemo:

If those registry items aren't there, what should I do?

I am a little wary of some of these procedures as this is a production remote environment.

The thing is I can't find guids for the above anywhere in the registry when I search, not even the one I know exists. I tried with and without the {}'s

I have done a delapptap and addtap before on this site, and it didn't help. admittedly I did not do the netsh commands and I am not sure if that would make all the difference or not?

The thing I am finding confusing is that I can see the local area connection 7 in the ncpa.cpl control panel.

What is the correct procedure for cleanly removing all traces of openvpn so I can start from scratch please? You mention in your posts above a few paths to look, but I couldn't find them, could you be more specific please?

Ok well I got it working. I removed the adapters from the section you told me about, removed mcafee security suite, uninstalled openvpn, rebooted and away I went good as new!

Thanks for your assistance.

I'll post points.
