Windows update failed on 2003 servers KB982168 and KB979909

I have several windows 2003 servers that failed to update one or two of the .NET framework security releases during the install of the 12 patches released yesterday.

I get the following failed to update notice:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86 (KB979909)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168)

any suggestions on how to get the updates to install?

Could you post here an error code from failed updates?

ASKER

yes

Error Code: 0x645 on both.

This error means: ERROR_UNKNOWN_PRODUCT - This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.
Look at recommendations at http://www.appdeploy.com/msierrors/detail.asp?id=119
the http://www.appdeploy.com/msierrors/detail.asp?id=119 solution did not fit.  not trying to remove software, trying to install windows updates
This solution may be not applicable to your case but your error still means "unknown product". This is definitely a bug of KB982168 and KB979909 patches... They should not install at all or install successfully.
Did you look into installer logs? Some detailed information should be available inside.
where are the installer logs located?
ok, let me give that a try
I had the same problem and after reboot I stoped all IIS services turn on logging and then tried to install again. This insllation was without errors. Hope this will help.

Im getting the same errors for updates KB979909 and KB979906 (Framework 3,5 SP1) on Windows XP machines as well.
We are having the same problem.  We use a WSUS server to push updates to about 100 Windows XP SP3 computers and KB982168 is failing on 44 of them.  I have a support ticket in with Microsoft and I'll let you know if I find anything.

The only solution that I have found so far is to uninstall every .NET item in Add/Remove Programs and then download the administrative packages from Microsoft and then just install them in order.  This isn't really practical in an enterprise environment though.
If you go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 and go to the Method 1 section it has links to every .net download.
let me know what microsoft has to say about it
I have a ticket in with Microsoft's professional support and they say that it is a supposed known issue and that they are working on it.  I haven't gotten a fix though.

Describe it please.

Thank you! :)
For anyone who still cares/may stumble upon this, I have been in contact with Microsoft and it seems that the problem is that in the registry the updates aren't being applied to the files. They are both installed, but link between each update and the core files has disappeared.  We are still looking into the cause.
