No matter what burning app i attempt to use (nero, roxio, ashampoo, or any other) they all say there is no cd in the drive when I want to burn a cd. There are 2 burners on this pc, one internal and one external usb. Is this an ASPI issue?

Do both burners show up under My Computer? If so, are you able to use Windows to write files to CD at all to test?

I would try different recording media - Sounds like you might have a CD-R or whatever your a burning to that doesn't work well with your burner(s) - Sony, Verbatim, and Staples make pretty decent and compatible media to record to (from person experience)

It's more likely a hardware or media issue.
Can you boot from one of the drives to check it reads disks OK without Windows?

1) The disks work in the computer sitting right next to it, and all other computers. It's not the media.
2) Yes the drives show up in explorer and I can read from them
3) Yes I can boot the pc using one of them

What kind of data are you trying to copy to the media?  Will it fit on the discs? Is it copyright material?

Any data, from burning an ISO to simply trying to make a disk of an avi file or even word documents. No it's not protected, I cannot burn anything using these drives, there is something wrong with the windows config that is causing it. This is why i asked about windows ASPI driver, since it will make or break whether windows see's a drive as a burner or not.

The ASPI layer in XP is usually very stable, but despite that try installing this as (yet another burner) it will check the ASPI Layer and fix it if needed as part of the install.

Below are a few MS knowledge base links regarding the issue.

CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as recordable device

Your CD or DVD drive cannot read or write media:

I already had cdburnerxp installed, but downloaded the new version, it made no difference.

The MS fixit tool says that both burners are not capable of writing to disks and that I should install a cd/dvd burner. So basically it is saying that both my burners are bad? That's kind of unlikely.
I am going to try the USB burner on another pc and see if it works.

Ok, the USB device won't work on another pc either, so it appears that both drives actually are bad, wow.
I am going to give the points to R2 for the MS fixit tool link, thanks for all replies.

Not the fix for me, but did lead me to the fix. Bad drives.

Do you have the recording tab showing when you right-click on the drive(s) and go to properties?
