If you're just using /etc/hosts for resolving hostnames to IP addresses:
vi /etc/hosts
Add the alias to the end of the line with the existing ip/hostname entry

That system then has an alias for itself, though any other systems won't know the alias so you have to repeat the process on other systems so _they_ can resolve the new name to an IP adress

what do you mean by primary host?

However, take note that the name will only applicable for this server you're editing.
If you want it to be recognize by other server, use Name Servers or DNS.
