'starttls' is the command to start SSL encryption.  You might be able to use SSH to talk to gmail but telnet by itself doesn't do encryption.

I wanted to know the commands to send to gmail smtp to talk with. What are these? I can manage to find a program other than telnet like Oracle. I already have an oracle procedure to communicate with smtp.
Hi,
What about a perl script like the one mentioned in "http://www.nixtutor.com/linux/sending-mail-through-gmail-with-perl/" ? You will have to install perl on your windows system to make this work.
I bet you can modify the perl script to accept input from your prompt. These inputs could be the username, password, email address and the body content.

HELO yourmailservname.domain.com
MAIL FROM: <you@yourdomain.com>
RCPT TO: <someone@gmail.com>
DATA
blah blah blahblah
.
QUIT

The problem is gmail server requires an encrypted SSL connection, so you can't just type all that stuff out like you would with a non-encrypted connection.
