32 bit OS on i5 processor

Jyozeal asked
Hi All,

I'm planning to buy a laptop for study purposes. I will use the system to install Visual studio 2008 ,SQL Server 2008 and silverlight. I came across a machine on dell. All the specs are good except that they r giving windows 7 professional 32-bit.

Will a 32-bit OS leverage the full power of the processor and the 4 GB RAM?
Let me know which bit OS is better on i3/i5 processors.

My buying decision is based on this and i appreciate your time and effort.

Thank you.

Mainly the 32 bit install will limit you to no more than 4GB of RAM. The 64 bit install will allow you to handle much more RAM in the future.

It's fine.   The only issue is that you won't be able to use all 4GB ... the top end of the address space has to be assigned to some system level functions, so you'll likely only be using about 3.25 to 3.5GB of the installed RAM.     But this will have negligible impact on performance -- you won't even notice it.

In addition, if you run any older programs you're less likely to have any compatibility issues than you would with the x64 version.

Bottom line:   While there's a small difference in performance, it's not likely to make any difference.   As long as you don't need to install more than 4GB of memory (very unlikely on a laptop), the x32 version is fine.

Thanks for timely help.
