Data Protection Manager

I'm looking at Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2010.  I will be backing up 9 TB of data from our file server.  This data is split into 2TB volumes.  Can I create a full offline backup copy of this data with DPM?  If so, how?

Thanks,

Sure. It's called "long term protection" in DPM.
Look at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399138.aspx for some technical information about DPM.

thanks for the link.  It was helpful.  So if I have a 2TB replica volume, and want to archive it to tape, but the tape can only store 800GB of data, will DPM automatically span 2 tapes?
Commented:
Yes.
If you'd like to test it yourslef - you can use virtual machine with DPM and 30 day trial of http://www.firestreamer.com/fs/Default.aspx

I think that is what I will end up doing.

One more quick question.  If DPM is backing up a File server with 5 2TB volumes.  Can it run the backup off all volumes simultaneously?  For this instance say that these volumes are in separate protection groups.

Commented:
It depends on your physical disk configuration... It can be done simultaneously but usually peformance is better when you do backup one volume at a time.

gotcha.  I know the DPM agent on the file server utilizes VSS during the backup.  Will VSS limit the number of backups being performed simultaneously?

Commented:
Have no idea... maybe you are right? I'll test it :)
