Server 2008 cannot connect to any smtp server

Hi

I got a Server 2008 R2 x64 box.  It used to be a DC, but I demoted it and removed a few roles.  Everything seems fine, and all seems to work, but i cannot connect to any smtp servers.  If I try to telnet on my ISP or other's that I know, it fails immediately and says it cannot connect.  I checked all my settings and DNS resolves fine and I am able to ping the smtp server.

So...what am I missing and how do I fix?  I really don't want to have to rebuild.

Thanks

Forgot to add that I have tried to connect via name and IP--same result.  It immediately errors out.  Other computers on the same network can connect just fine and send.  I need this server to connect for software that can send out email notifcations.

Make sure you are now pointing to a new DNS server in the TCP\IP settings since you demoted this server from a DC you most likely have it pointing to itself for DNS.

Are you doing this from home or from a business?  Some home ISP's will block port 25 so people can't run SMTP servers... this could be one cause of this..

dns is pointing to firewall---which forwards to ISP (same setup for all pc's).  this is at a business--other computers on the same network can connect and send to the same smtp server

im not trying to run an smtp server--im trying to connect to my ISP smtp server.  this is for sending emails--the same way users do for sending emails via pop accounts

not sure if this matters, but on the server it is missing the connection-specific DNS suffix.  It's on the computers, but not this server.  I tried setting it manually, but it made no difference.

Check the Windows 2008 server local firewall.

Is the other computers part of the domain.

local firewall is disabled---no long running domain---just work sations.  domain will be rebuilt under new company name

To clarify, you say you can not telnet to any SMTP server either in or out of the network?

Did you disable the service just disabled it properly? Disabling the firewall service cause issues.

its disabled properly via ser ver manager.  i cant ping outside smtp.  i dont have one inside.

Please do this (even though you've done it before) as I want to see the output:

>telnet yourispmailserver.com 25

then copy and paste whatever messages show up when it disallows you to get in..

Thanks...

What kind of firewall are you using?

It may be blocking it as your server may not be able to authenticate to the firewall since removing it from the domain which could cause different rules to apply to it which may be why ping works but not telnet

sorry for the delay--wanted to let you know it's fixed and how it got fixed.  I was told last night to rebuild it on the spot.  Once i rebuilt the server, the smpt worked fine.  After reloading software, I noticed it broke once I loaded McAfee Enterprise AV.  There is no firewall with this app--just AV.  Once I removed McAfee, it worked fine again.  Not sure what is going on, but we will be switching over to Panda to resolve this.
Thanks to everyone for their help!
