centos hdc errors

the following error is visible in /var/log/messages and is frequently being repeated - how can I find out what is the cause?

this is a fresh centos 5.5 machines running on top of VMWare ESX

First of all: if your installation works fine, this is a message you may safely ignore, especially in a VM.

hdc is one of your IDE devices, most likely a CDROM drive, and the failure message could simply say that there is no media inserted.
