Connet to SQL Server 2008 Exp over VPN with Windows 7

I need to connect to a MSSQL 2008 Express over a VPN on my laptop using Windows 7 Pro. The VPN connection is good. It gives me an IP address. I can ping the remote server. But when trying to connect with SSMS it gives me the following:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

On my old XP Pro, it works fine (with, of course, the same connection parameters, login, etc). So, I guess it's a Windows 7 stuff. Firewall has been disabled on my Win7.

Any idea what it could be??

thanks for your time
Watch Question

nevermind, I just found out my problem. Firewall has been disabled on the public profile, not on the Private profile. After disabling the firewall on the private network, it works.

is there a way I can let the firewall turned on while still be capable of connecting to remote SQL Server??

Add an exception to allow outbound connections from SSMS (assuming it is your W7 causing the issues).
