Application that turns the computer on and off

I am looking for an application that will allow me to turn a pc on and off, on a daily, or weekly basis. - better yet if I can control this function over the internet, but not a must.

Thanks,
JP

you can always use remote desktop to shut down the computer. But to turn it on you need to physically push the power button.

Most systems support Wake-on-LAN (WOL), which allows a system to be turned on remotely by sending a "magic packet" to the system.    I routinely turn on my media and backup servers via this method.    You simply have to enable WOL in the BIOS, and note the MAC address of the network adapter ... then you just send the appropriate magic packet and the system turns on.

I use this simple utility to send the magic packet:  http://sourceforge.net/projects/wake-on-lan/
You simply create a shortcut something that executes the wol utility with your adapter's MAC address ... mine looks like this:
"C:\Program Files\Utilities\wol.exe" 00:30:48:B0:A7:19"

To do it over the internet you has to also include the IP address, but it still works fine.

As for turning a system off ... that's simple.    You can simply do it via remote desktop (as suggested above);  or you can do it automatically via a scheduled task using a utility like ShutDown.exe, which is in your Windows\System32 folder.    Note that shutdown can shut down the local computer (which you could do with a scheduled task)  OR a remote computer ... so you can shut another PC down remotely.    The syntax is shown here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317371

Garycase,

I wil try your approach - it sounds like the perfect solution.  I will post tomorrow once I have attempted to do it.
