We have a Windows 2003 file server which was working fine but over the last month users pcs are hanging when accessing the files within the mapped folders or when they are copying files to their local deskop. Their pcs freezes. Nothing strange is appearing in the event logs. We can ping the server and rdp to the server fine. Any ideas?

Watch Question

Could you please provide the answers to ALL the below questions, we can start troubleshooting after that.

1.
are you getting event ID 2019, 2020, 333, 2021 or 2022 in the SYSTEM event logs on the server or the clients?

2.
What is the client OS?

3.
Are the servers/clients 64 bit or 32 bit? you can find it in Msinfo32.exe.

4.
Are the mapped drives located in a SAN?

5.
Do you see the problem with only big files or even small files

6.
Do you have write caching enabled on the drives where these shares are located?

7.
Do you see the problem if you copy locally or while copying from the mapped drives using the command prompt?

8.
Does the copy operation eventually completes or fails midway. if it fails do u get any error? if yes please post it here

9.
Can you please export the following key from the windows 2003 server as HIV file  and send it?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

10.
Try disabling antivirus on source and destination and copy the file

 No

2.

XP / Win 7

3.

Server 32 bit / Clients mainly 32 bit

4.

No

5.

Both

6.
Do you have write caching enabled on the drives where these shares are located?

7.

Both a problem, when the issue occurs, can see the shares from the command prompt.

8.

Appears to hang until we reboot the server

9.
Can you please export the following key from the windows 2003 server as HIV file  and send it?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

10.
Try disabling antivirus on source and destination and copy the file
Complete the following steps:

On the server go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
Export this key to take a backup and save it as a reg file

On the right pane, change the value for PagedPoolSize to FFFFFFFF
Create a new DWORD entry called PoolUsageMaximum and set its value to 40 (decimal)
Create another DWORD called SystemCacheDirtyPageThreshold and set its value to 512 or 1/4th of RAM which ever is lower.
In the same registry location ensure that SystemPages value and LargeSystemCache values are set to 0

Ensure that you don't have /3GB switch in boot.ini

Please Note: All the above registry entries are case sensitive

REBOOT THE SERVER AFTER MAKING THESE CHANGES

The problem should be resolved after making the above changes, if its still present, you can use a tool called Eseutil.exe, it comes with exchange server. If you have access to an exchange server copy this file both the dll and exe and try to copy the file using this tool. This tool uses un-buffered IO and should work.

You can also try copying using Robocopy tool
