Windows XP (SP3) Supports this platform (i.e. Core i3)

Who told you that they are not compatible?
Yes intel i3 and i5 are both compatible with XP.

If incase laptop vendor are providing only windows 7 than there is feature know as Windows XP mode you can use that.

or alternatively there is also Microsoft Virtual PC software available to  run windows xp simultaneously.

hi expert:

one of my friend bought new dell code i3 processor laptop, with windows 7 in it, then he tried to install the windows xp with sp2 on it, the operating system was installed but could not able to see great performance, when compared to a older core 2 duo laptop.

i was asking for right comment, sorry typo...

While it works, the performance problem could be due to the manufacturers not providing optimal drivers for XP against the new motherboards.
And, I believe i3 is more for minimal systems using low power, even though it is newer, it is actually not as fast as the best core 2 duos.  i5 and i7 perform better, in that order (i7 > i5).
did he try installing XP service pack3 this will solve his problem of performance.

do you mean that core i3 is not equivalent to the code 2 duo, is the core i3 less in performance from the older core 2 duo processors, how did u differentiate the between those two, and then how come we can take that the i5 and i7 and good processors.

rajeshjamnadas:
let me ask my friend to install sp3 and check for the performance
yes i3 and be less powerful than core 2 duo in term of speed. As if your friend has core 2duo 3Ghz and i3 2.1 Ghz than it will matter.

This gives you a relative scale of performance.

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2009-desktop-cpu-charts-update-1/PCMark-Vantage,Marque_fbrandx14,1394.html

i7 > i5 (high-end) > core 2 quad extreme > i5 (low-end) > core 2 quad > i3 ([very] high-end) > core 2 duo > i3

Notice in the chart, the i3 is clocked at 2.93 GHz (high end) just to feature above some Core 2 Duos.  The core i3s that you normally see are 2.1-2.5 GHz.

hi,

as suggested i have installed windows xp sp 3 in the dell laptop, but could not able to get great performance as compared to the windows 7 operating system, do i have to make any other changes in the bios or some thing to get a good performance in xp.
Windows 7 nows to handled multicore as well as multithread application more efficiently.
I think your question was whether we can run XP on i3 processor and answer for this is yes.
but to utilize the processor more efficiently u hv to use windows 7(which has better kernel) or vista.
