Modify desktop icon size via registry in Server 2008

omnipower321 asked

I need to standardize the desktop icon size on all of our 2008 servers.  I have attempted to do this by modifying HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon Size, and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop\IconSize, but both do not seem to work.

The only thing that seems to stick is the manual right click on the desktop and setting the size to small.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon Size
is the correct key. You need to log off and relogin or restart will solve your problem.

You will probably want to create a theme and apply it by GPO.  Using a GPO is going to be the best way to control the desktop, icons, etc.

I will give HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon Size a go on another system, but log off and back on is not working on my current test box.  I will eventually be applying this through a custom ADMX template via group policy, but having trouble getting it to work with the direct registry key modification.
ok try to remote login from another machine and check whether that setting is applied or not.

Sorry for the delay, your suggestion worked.  Thank you!
