Problem linking exchange meetings

We are currently working on an exchange migration project, migrating data from an older groupware solution to Exchange.

The problem we are having occurs when importing calendar-objects into different calendars.

Imagine that a meeting has an organizer and 3 attendees; the iCal for the meeting is imported into all four calendars. Custom MAPI properties are set on the objects:

 - Flags are set to organized in the organizer's calendar, received in the attendee's calendar
 - PidLidGlobalObjectId and PidLidCleanGlobalObjectId are set to identical values for all instances
 - etc.

The problem:

 - If attendees attempt to accept or decline the meeting the organizers calendar is not updated.
 - If the organizer updates the objects this appears as a duplicate ( the duplicate is linked to the organizer's calendar) in the attendee's calendars

Does anyone know what else might be required to solve this?

because the calendar entries have been imported from another mail system, as far as Exchange is concerned it's not an Exchange object therefore when you update it as the organiser it will create a new object.

Also the free/busy information will not be connected to this object so updating as a participant will not work either.
