Cannot get Alternate Access Mappings to work on non 80 port

Hi,

I am having a problem where I have set up a new webapp and site collection for an external internet site on MOSS2007. I want our internet url address to not show the port number (which is 81 in this example) When I enter the url (e.g. http://internet.contoso.com) I get a page 404 error, but if I enter in http://internet.contoso.com:81 then the page loads correctly. I have added the DNS entry 'internet' as an A record to the WFE server ipaddress as well as added http://internet.contoso.com to the alternate access mappings 'internet' zone(minus the port number) and set 'internet' as the host header when I created the applicaton through central admin but still having no luck. Can this only be done by extending from application port 80 as I don't want to use port 80 for our internet site? Please help

You will need to extend to port 80. AAM is on the web application so your making adjustments to one web application. In this case you have two seperate web application, one on 80 and one on 81.

Thanks skyshare,

Is there another way I can remove the view of port 81 from the external url?

Sorry I'm not following...the "View"?

Hi Skyshare,

Thanks for your help, I managed to create another independent web app also on port 80 and then created the 'internet' site collection on there. Is this good practice or should I not have two web sites on port 80 even though they are on seperate web apps? This seems logical as it keeps the two sites on completely seperate applications as we require.

That's perfectly fine. It's an issue when you try and mix the two.
