printing in remote desktop

Hi,

been using citrix to access a remote site shipping application which uses a thermal barcode printer that prints labels.  Its a zebra brand printer.  In citrix, printer works but when we log in using remote desktop for some reason we cannot print to it.  The printer is attached locally on lpt1 port of workstation and workstation logs into a remote site that has the shiipping software called starship.  There is a choice to print using print driver or directly to port.  Currently we use print directly to port.  Any suggestions?  thanks.

When connecting via RDP, you have to have printer forwarding enabled in the shortcut to the RDP connection, first and foremost.  You should also make sure that the Zebra drivers are loaded onto the Windows server into which you are connecting.  If both of those two actions are completed, you should see your printer in the availible printers list.  If you don't, you should see some errors regarding printer registration in your Event logs.  Please post those errors if they exist.

Ok will check those first.  Also, when i was testing and trying to add printer while logged in a citrix session, do i select local or network printer in the add printer setup screen?  thanks.

I am not qualified to comment on what do do in a Citrix environment.
If I was RDP connected to the server, I would add it as a local printer, load the drivers, and then delete the printer back out but leave the drivers loaded.  This way, your users should be able to use the installed drivers when connecting to the server and forwarding their local printers.

I used the add local printer like you said after loading drivers and got printer installed. Now i have to test if i can print to the local zebra label printer within remote desktop session.  Only problem is the user i am logged into has no remote desktop selection under all programs accessories communications where it usually is.  Is there a command i can run in the run box of windows to invoke it?

Actually found the command it was mstsc so was able to bring up.  Now, i looked in options of remote desktop and checked printers and serial ports to be available under local resources.  Is that what you meant about printer forwarding or is this found somewhere else?  thanks.

Hi,

strange thing happened when i logged into the server via remote deskop.  I tested printer first locally before logging into remote desktop and it printed test page but when i logged into remote desktop session, the printer showed up as offline.  Never saw that  before.  Any ideas? Just to let you know this is actually a different machine and username  i am logging into as so is it possible it needs to add printer again even though the driver is loaded on this server from previous session using other machine and username?

You should see the printer add itself (assuming the drivers are present) when the Zebra printer is connected to the PC from which you are logging in.
