strange issue with saving in InDesign and photoshop on MAC til Win2k3 file server

Our environment:
MAC Pro's with Leopard OS ('09 early and late models)
Windows 2003 File Server

Software: CS4 InDesign and Photoshop

Some of our users experience an error intermittently (roughly once a month), where they get a prompt when trying to save their data with the message "cannot locate the ressource file".

When that happens they can sometimes manage to choose Save As and not loose data, other times they are not in time, and the program (ID or PS) crashes, with the added kicker that the files they where working from are deleted from the server in worst case scenarios.

I have been trawling google and Adobe for references to this issue, with no luck. I have no data on the server that I can relate to this issue, not that I want to exclude that from my error search though.

Also, sometimes when you save a file in InDesign, next time you try to open it again, it is no longer on the server.

How can I troubleshoot this issue?

This link seems to suggest that incompatible versions of Adobe software might be the problem:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/331/331114.html

Hi Brugge

Can you provid a Link to this statement from Adobe about strongly advising against working on files across the network?

In the mean time I will try to look into Version Cue.

Best Regards

With the introduction of CS5 the product Version Cue has been discontinued by Adobe.

Does anyone here know of a good alternative for version control of the files from InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator?

Best Regards
