Cannot establish remote desktop connection with user account that is already locally logged into machine (Windows XP Professional)

mrcannon asked
When trying to use either Remote web workplace (SBS 2003) or RDP from another machine, I cannot log onto machine remotely if the account trying to be used for remote login is already logged into the PC.  I get a message that the connection timed out unless I use another account in which case the remote login works properly.

Yes this is how microsoft remote desktop works.
If already logged in from another workstation 1st you have to logout and then login through remote desktop.
Thank you.

Normally you can login using remote desktop with Win XP Pro and it will take the console session if you are logged in already as that user at the console and then feed it to the RDP, if you are try to remote desktop to the machine as a different user account as is logged in at console WIn XP Pro will prompt to log the other user out/log the console session user out and complete the login of the remote user.

What appears to be happening is that in this case Win XP is having trouble closing the console feed and converting to the RDP session.  The remote user sees a message that the connection has timed out.
Could be a bug in that particular user account on the target PC. To test this, create another user account, then try logging in using RDP from a remote PC. Remember to give the targe PC user account a password.

You are correct in your expectations of how RDP should work.

If the above does not work, let me know as I have a few other ideas. I use RWW and RDP frequently. Also, let me know the OS on the target PC and the PC from which you are running RDP and if it over a WAN or LAN.

None of the above were successful.  Instead of spending additional time on issue we opted for workaround which was to always log out before leaving office.
Have you tried these options?
Usage: shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "c
omment"] [-d up:xx:yy]

No args                 Display this message (same as -?)
-i                      Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l                      Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
        -s                      Shutdown the computer
-r                      Shutdown and restart the computer
        -a                      Abort a system shutdown
        -m \\computername       Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx                   Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
-c "comment"            Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f                      Forces running applications to close without war
-d [u][p]:xx:yy         The reason code for the shutdown
                                u is the user code
p is a planned shutdown code
xx is the major reason code (positive integer le
ss than 256)
yy is the minor reason code (positive integer le
