Why do routers use serial interfaces vs. ethernet

I know this may sound dumb to some of you but I am studying for my CCNA. I'm wondering why routers use serial interfaces instead of ethernet cables? I can only assume they have a higher throughput but am not exactly sure. I will verify any answers online and respond with the points. Thank you for any input.
