CMOS Battery

Hello,
A client of mine received the following message when she booted her computer Dell Optiplex GX5200 XP).
"Alert! System Battery Voltage is low. strike F1to continue, F2 to run setup utility"
I assume I just have to replace the CMOS battery but I have a few questions.
1) Does the battery power allow a chip on the MOBO to store BIOS settings while the computer is off? If not, what is the purpose of the battery?
2)Will the process of removing it (to replace it) affect the BIOS or anything else I have to be concerned with?
3) Do I just turn off the computer and put in a new one of the same voltage and size?
Thanks

Thanks people. Nice quick answers. Aleghart, the ability to replace while the computer is on is especially helpful as this is an older computer and I don't know if there are any customizations.
