Wow very comprehensive.  Cheers everyone for contributing, im liking the discussion.

Im not sure on the axact number. i recon it will be between 5 and 10 mobile phones.  We are a manfacturing company.  It will only be the office people: directors and the people on the road .  I suppose the cost is going to be a factor to how many people get one.

I dont know how much BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) cost exactly but people have told me to stay away due to the high price.

im liking the links for the apps aswell, it all weighs into the decision which mobile phones to buy for hte company.

I want to standardise if possible from a support point of view. I'm not sure because of your comments comparing mobile phones to cars.  thinks one needs more thought

cheers Snibborg, ill check it out.

Good to know Mikal613
Im thinkiing about HTC desire and use Touchdown like cgptsd suggested.  has anyone had any experience of the HTC desire? and also touchdown?

Snibborg you said
"Smartphones have an expected life of a few years at most and that, ironically, is the shortest possible amount of time it will take for 4th generation phone services to even being to be rolled out in any meaningful way."

By fourth generation phones you mean phones that will use a 4g signal??   so thats waiting for the telecom companys to update their network and start sending and receiving in 4g.

is a Iphone a 4 generation phone?

Just update the post. I've decided androids going to be the operating system for me.  I'm still stuck on which android handsert to go for, the samsung galaxy or the desire.  the samsung is bigger and better screen which appeals to me.

Samsung galaxy:

AGAINST
-No flash for the camera
-not sure on the battery. Aparrently same as the Desire
-only works at certain GSM frequences.  ill be moving to new zealand soon so need to make sure it works there.
-from users past experience samsung dont upgrade to later version of android very quickly, if at all.  The  benifits of the newer android are great! including speed boost, flash and better exchange support.
-GPS not good indoors

FOR
-Amazing screen AMOLED. very bright.
-Android 2.1 pre-installed

cheers for your views snibborg.  when i buy one for myself i probably wont buy one for a while so i want to make sure i get the right phone for me.  the only really big plus for the samsung is the bright screen (which is a big +)which can be seen in the daylight and its bigger.   Otehr than that it has features  that i probably wont use.   for instance i dont see the need for a 3d graphics proccessor if im not playing games? All i see it doing is chewing away at battery life.

yeah they'll be unlocked.   The report i read about the samsung i9000 said it wasnt very good out doors compared to other phones tested - sometimes lots connection. i dont know why i put in indoors, sorry for hte confusion.  GPS will be very important to me.

you make a good point about the flash.  i really having a flash
Just to let you all know ive gone for the samsung i9000, ive got it in my hands now and quite please with it :-)  I found a youtube video that lead me to a couple of website which described how to flash the phone.  This sorted out problems with the battery, gps.  The gsm bands will work in the countries i will be visiting.  However there is still no flash and still in doubt about future support from Samsung but weighing it up, i still thought the better screen made it a winner.

Thanks for all your help guys!!!!
ive not tried all the business features yet (exchange and the apps) but will post back with the details.
