Windows 2003 server will not allow me to access shares since upgrade

Recently did a bunch of Microsof Windows updates on a Windows 2003 domain controller.  Been having major issues with the shares and domain policy since.

I cannot access the shares from the server itself but can access them from any other PC in the office.  I can go to \\ServerName and see the shares but when I try to access them I get and message "No network provider accepted the given network path."

Also I cannot got to \\IPAddress I get the error "Windows cannot find IP Address"

Third symptom is when I try to open Domain Security Policy it says it cannot find any domain controller.

I have dont sfc \scannow and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling File and Print shareing.  "Client for Microsoft Networks" is installed.  And I am not getting any additional errors in event viewer.
 HELP this is bizzar.

Sounds like a possible issue with an update.  This thread started earlier and we have not yet resolved it.

Can you send a screenshot of ipconfig /all from the DC?
is the server looking at itself first as the Active directory DNS server? and if it's not the DNS server, is the IP being updated to the AD DNS server properly?

The server is the Domain, DNS and DHCP server.  There is no other server on the network.  I have two different servers in two different offices behaving the same way.

Can you uninstall the updates one at a time through add/remove programs to see if which one may have caused the issue?

Author

Commented:
We did over 100 updates. That would be very difficult and that could cause other problems.
Steven CarnahanAssistant Vice President\Network Manager

Commented:
That would be a major task indeed. I will check ours to see which ones we have not applied to see if I can narrow it down. We are not experiencing this issue. I will get back to you soon.

Thank you for posting your own question, as the two questions and problems are not co-related to the other thread in progress:

So, you updated the server and you are having problems communicating.

Go to windows firewall and make sure it has and exception to Windows file sharing. Upon updating to SP2 your firewall will re-enable itself. Windows firewall is a system state firewall that will only reply if the server is the one that started the conversation. "hence the term system state".

Since communicating with the shares locally was initiated by the server, it allows the traffic. Since communicating with the shares on a client computer was NOT initiated by the server, that netbios traffic is blocked.

Author

Commented:
I did not install SP2 during this update session.  SP2 has been on the server since it was put into production almost a year ago.  The windows firware is disabled and not being used on this system.
Steven CarnahanAssistant Vice President\Network Manager

Commented:
Okay, I have checked and we have all the updates installed on our systems and we are not experiencing this issue.

CheifIT:

From reading your reply it sounds backwards to what the original issue was reported. Just want to make sure I understand what you are saying.

Commented:
OK, So SP2 has been on board for a while and working fine. You installed other updates and are now having problems communicating.

Sometimes Microsoft thinks they know best and downloads a Microsoft driver (through an update), for the NIC. It appears like you are having problems with the NIC, and that would be my next guess.

To confirm and be more precise, let's do a couple pings:
Please go to the server and ping itself by netbios name, DNS name and IP address. All three offer different information>
Example:
Ping server01     <<<Netbios
Ping server01.domain.name   <<DNS
Ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx... is the IP of the server)   <<IP uses ARP

Now, go to a client and ping the problem child server by the same three methods.

What is the results. Do you have a problem with netbios, DNS, or IP  ((or all three))??

Now, right click on my computer and go to device manager. Click on the "View" drop down menu at the top and select "show hidden devices" . Are there any device drivers with exclamation points on them??

These two simple troubleshooting techniques should show if you have driver problems and what different commuinications protocols are effected by it.

Author

Commented:
I did all three pings both on the serer and from a client PC and I got good replies from all 6 ping attemps.
No exlamation points on any of the network adapter devices.

As I said earlier I can browse the shares using the Netbios name from a client PC but not if I am directly on the server.  Interestingly I tried to browse to the server from a client PC using the server IP address and I get an unable to find message which is the same behavior I get on the server if I try to browse using it's own IP.

Try reseting the Winsock.

Remove any AV.

I already ruled out the AV software.  And resetting the Winsock didn't fix the problem.

Did you remove AV? Or just disabled?

How many NICs do you have on the Server???

Commented:
Is netbios bound to the second nic??

Author

Commented:
2 NIC cards but we only use one the other one has always been disabled.
I'm not sure if netbios is "bound" to the enabled NIC card.  How would I check that?

Commented:
Go to the command prompt and type:

Net config redir

Compare the redirector MAC to an IPconfig /all

Commented:
NetbiosSmb - shows no active workstation
NetBT_Tcpip is bound to the online NIC

Commented:
SMB is blocked by something and you are relying upon Netbios for these CIFS shares.

SMB over TCP uses port 445, TCP

Commented:
If SMB is not blocked, it should appear as:

0000000000000

Author

Commented:
Yes that's what is shows

Commented:
Your redirector is pointed the right way and is directing netbios traffic correctly.

Let's perfor DCdiag reports on all servers by going to the command prompts and typing:

DCdiag /v
and
DCdiag /test:DNS

Any errors???

Won't even let me install the support tools.  When I run setup it keeps telling me the source file is not found.  No matter where I try to intall it from on the server.  I double checked security on the folders and drive and they show the normall securities that should be there.

Can you try something:

Woud you temporarily disable Antivirus software to see if that frees up your access?

What AV are you using? There are know issues with AVs causing this error.

I am using Symantec AntiVirus and I already tried disabling all the services and that did not help.

Disabling does not stop issues with AV. Please fully remove the AV for testing.

Yep, dariusq is good at symantec. I use  McAfee. If uninstalling is what dariusq recommend, I would go that route. But, it does sound like an antivirus causing this issue.

Are you using SEP? If you are please download the cleanwipe tool to fully remove the product.

I use McAfee now since Windows 2008 server came out because of all the issues Symantec and other products caused huge problems.

The second server I have with this same problem doesn't have SEP installed on it so I don't feel that removing SEP will help this particular server.  I am definately looking into other alternatives for AntiVirus as I am frustrated with SEP.

I am completely baffled on this issue.  I did a full system state and shadow copy restore from before the windows updates and still I cannot access the shares from the server iteself but can access them from a PC on the network.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Just in case anyone else has this issue, we had the same problem on a few servers where patches were quite out of date, and narrowed it down to the combination of two hotfixes/updates.

Our findings/solution have only been tested on Server 2003 R2 (x86), but that does not mean they are limited to this configuration.

If the following updates are applied alongside each other prior to a reboot, shares and other resources stop working:

KB968389 - Extended Protection for Authentication
KB982671 - .NET Framework 4 for Windows Server 2003

To fix, just apply a further patch on reboot:-

KB975467 - MS09-059: Vulnerability in the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service could allow denial of service
