Backup Exec 12.5 asking for Remote Agent to backup data shared through VM.

scotttiamit used Ask the Experts™
I have a 64 bit Windows 2003 Server installed on a machine with a SAS storage unit attached and backup exec is installed on the local OS.

I then have a VM installed in VMware which is 32 bit Windows 2003 Server, the SAS storage is mapped to this VM and is a shared drive to our other servers.

I am trying to backup the data from the shared drive in the VM, using backup exec on the local OS but keep getting the error that I need to purchase a license for remote agent.

I have tried adding User Defined Selections to the share \\SERVER\Data which lets me select the directories required but I still get the same error.

I am trying to avoid the large cost of an agent license.

Any ideas? Thanks.

If you have a media server and you want to backup a remote OS you will need to purchase a remote agent.  If the share is on  a remote server you will need a remote agent.

What you could do is use ntbackup to backup to the backkup exec media server share and then backup to tape..

Unfortunately you cant avoid it as you are required to have valid license, so thats the reason you are getting the error
What Paul suggested is a good workaround to try
Or you can also stop the VM and backup the vmdk directly. although it is not a file level backup, you can still extract the files if you want to
