Storage group not backing up

Hi,

I have an issue with my Exchange 2007 server not backing up correctly.

We have 5 storages groups.  4 of the storage groups backup no problem, but one of the storage groups fail to back up.

The problem I have is that this storage group wasn't purging the log files, and the drive ran out of space.  So I was advised by Microsoft support to manually remove some of log files.  I did this but now the storage group isn't backing up at all.

I have checked the event viewer and got the following errors:

Event Type:      Error

Description:
Exchange VSS Writer (instance 9e135b3f-c3f4-482c-968f-700e013eb8dd:1) has unsuccessfully
completed the backup of storage group 'StorageGroup01'. No log files have been truncated
for this storage group.

I have looked through a few forums and articles on the web.  Some are saying that I can dismount the databases and doing an eseutil /cc & others are saying to put the log files back in place and run the backup again, this should purge the logs, but its not worked in the past so I can't see it working again, although we have now upgraded our backup software.

One other thing I was thinking of doing was to compress the drive that the logs files are kept on, put the old files back and run the backup and see if this does the purge, would this be recommended??

Any help/advice is most welcome.

Thanks

Hi,

Does the Exchange 2007 is updated with Service Pack 2? If not then update it and then try to backup the Storage Group.

Hope this helps,
shree

It should backed up . however if not then you can take a copy of the database to the location where you have plenty of space and place all the moved log filed by you to the same location run the database recovery tool and replay the logs . once it will done you may place it to the original location.
The problem I have is that this storage group wasn't purging the log files, and the drive ran out of space"

to fix this issue we should have granted full access to the account that back up runs on full access on the log file directory.

now it looks like you have deleted the logs file that were not commited to the databases yet ..

now i would check if the database/s inside this SG are consistant.. and restore the inscosistant ones from backup (to the point restore) as the required log files are  evidently deleted.

please let me know if i  did not get to the root of the issue.
Hi Guys,

shreedhar - upgrading to SP2 isn't an option yet, as I have not tested, and I need a quick fix.

firojkhan - thanks for your suggestion, but the problem I have right now is with space, as we don't have much space on the SAN for me to move the database or log files, any other suggestions.

dhruvarajp - the account that runs the backups has full admin access to the log files directory, in fact it has full access to the exchange server as recommended by CA - as for restoring the inconsistant databases, I cannot do this as the log files haven't been backing up for a while, therefore I would have to go back to a restore from 2 months ago, and I manager doesn't want to do this, any other suggestions??
