Right, we have a laptop (advent) that has no backlight. We can see the screen very dim. External monitor works fine etc.

I have replaced the inverter with 3 different (working) inverters, I have replaced the screen wit h2 different know working screens and also replaced the VGA cable to the board.  Whatever I try, nothing has worked.

Can anyone suggest anything else?

If you cant make it work by replacing parts, enable remote desktop or use a 3rd party remote tool such as vnc so you can still use the laptop without the external monitor, then you at least get some use from it.

This is not the response I want, I need a few ideas on what the fault could be.

It is apparently a faulty motherboard. Some IBM laptops are famous for it but it does happen to other types. The motherboard will have to repaired or replaced.

I suspected that. Do you have any idea which circuit is responsible for driving the inverter?
Commented:
Sorry, I do not but if you are interested in an inverter hack that will light the LCD read Shef7's comments in this thread.

Well, it worked for a short while then died again so looks like the data sheet was fine,  I think it is a motherboard problem.
