In Outlook 2007  why does the message tracking button only appear on sent emails which have had a read receipt from internal recipients and not on emails that have had read receipts from external recipients?

* Its probably because when you set a request for delivery reciept or read reciept for the external users, your home exchange server could only trace the email till the point it leaves your exchange organization.

* Then the next stage of recieving the reciept would solely depend on the messaging setup of the company at the external users side whether they have allowed auto-responses to the internet.

* Hence when you set a delivery request for any external user you would always get a response from your server saying that the message is relayed.

* However in case of an internal user, the organization has proper controll over the emails and thus the exchange server could easily track the messages and that explains the tracking button for internal users.

Hopefully justified,

Thanks for your comments Rudram, I have a user who is adamant that the tracking button appeared in sent emails after a read receipt was received from external recipients and it stopped happening sometime before Christmas last year. All the testing I have done with my own emails proves that currently the button only appears after a read receipt from internal recipients and not when received from external recipients. The user - who is a director of the company concerned - would like the facility restoring but I am at a loss as to how to achieve this.

* well in that case you might simply have to justify saying that the exchange configuration settings must have been changed at the recipients end so as to not trigger NDRs or auto emails to external or internet users.

* Best would be to actually check the users mailbox and look for the previous email that showed the tracking button. And then try a test email to that recipient if possible and then check the tracking option with reciept requests.
