Hi,

We have a Windows 2003 64b Sharepoint Server  WSS3.0 that has been running fine for 6months. nothing has been added to the Server but when logging on the home page (http://sharepoint.domain.com/default.aspx reports the following error:-

An unexpected error has occurred.

Web Parts Maintenance Page: If you have permission, you can use this page to temporarily close Web Parts or remove personal settings. For more information, contact your site administrator.
Troubleshoot issues with Windows SharePoint Services.

We are still able to access shared folders - http://sharepoint.domain.com/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx

All of the Windows / Sharepoint Services are running and no event error have been logged.

Can anyone help with this.

Thanks

I would try opening the home page in SharePoint designer and removing the suspect / broken web part.  Another thing you can do is enable the publishing feature, create a new page and specify the new page as the landing page in site settings under look and feel.

when i open the wss site default.aspx with Sharepoint Designer i get the following error:-

soap:ServerServer was unable to process request. ---> A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Web Part Page cannot be displayed or imported because it is not registered as safe on this site. You may not be able to open this page in an HTML editor that is compatible with Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer. To fix this page, contact the site administrator to have the Web Part or Web Form Control configured as safe. You can also remove the Web Part or Web Form Control from the page by using the Web Parts Maintenance Page. If you have the necessary permissions, you can use this page to disable Web Parts temporarily or remove personal settings. For more information, contact your site administrator.
ok, i some digging, i found this link

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointcustomization/thread/45ae8d6a-349c-4879-b973-98cbd04f5496

which suggested that i add ?contents=1 to the end of the site address. this let me to the web part maintenance page. From here i had a list of web part which i one by one deleted. seems the RSSFeedReeder was causing the problem.

thanks for you help.
