Grand Prix 4 on Windows 7

I just got a new WIndows 7 PC and love it.  I have a very old PC game called "Grand Prix 4" by Microporse that I love but am having trouble getting it to run.  It installes fine, but when I go to run it, an error pops up that says "DirectX 8.1 must be installed".  I have a new GT9800 video cars, which I believe uses DirectX 10.  The game runs in a DOS shell.  I have tried running it in all the different compatibility modes, and my PC will not run XP mode in Windows 7.

Does anyone have any experince with tis particualr game and Windows 7?

Thanks.

If your Windows 7 version can't run XP mode, install VMware Server or VirtualBox and install XP within that (provided you have an XP installation CD with valid License).

Both of these tools are free.

There have been people running this on Windows 7. No XP mode.

For your issue, they mentioned using windows 98 compatibility mode.

That's a great suggestion, but I don't see a free version of vmware, and the link to download virtualbox is broken.

VMware Server is free, you just have to register the copy to download it, you then get a license key. The Link to VBox should also work, at least when I click on the Link it works (you can also google for it to get other links).

I like Vbox. you would only need the workstation form of VMware. You should not need the whole server. it is free. Did you try in 98 compatibility? The reason I mention is many VMs do not yet do as well with gaming because hey cannot use the video card like the main console.

No, the workstation version isn't free. Only the server is free.

You are right. my bad. I thought it used to be free. Another reason I use Vbox

Make sure you have the GP4 patch but otherwise the game should run cleanly in Windows 7 32-bit.
If you've got DirectX 11 installed on your system XP SP3 Compatibility Mode should allow GP4 to see it as 8.1
BTW there's a great GP4 modders forum @ http://www.grandprixgames.org/list.php?4

Tried Vbox, didn't eork.  Tried reloading, applying the patch and running in ALL the different compatibility modes, didn't work. Tried setting up a dual boot with XP, didn't work (kept getting the DirectX 8.1 error).  I'm guessing it had something to do with my viseo card.  I give up.

VBox doesn't support DirectX
Which error are you getting:
a )DirectX 8.1 must be installed
b) Please make sure you have Directx 8.1 or higher installed
c) Please make sure you have Directx 8.1 or higher installed. Also verify that your video card meets the minimum requirements.
Which driver are you using for the 9800GT?
Have you installed a DirectX redistributable?

"You must install DirectX 8.1 before running the game"  I am running the latest Windows 7 driver from the nVidia website.  I am not sure what you mean by a DirectX redistributable?

We'll get to the DirectX distro later.
In compatibility mode did you just choose the Operating System to emulate or the acceleration settings too?
Try either Win98/Me or XP SP3 but also check the administrator box and the bottom three graphics settings (Visual themes thru DPI settings)
If no go then add the 640x480 & again if no good the 256 color option. (These aren't likely to help but just for completeness & for diagnostics)

There's a possibility that a game reinstall will be needed adding these changes before launching  if GP4 sets up a configuration file initially.  But as you've not actually got that far we should be OK.

Tried all, in the order you suggested....still the same error message.

DirectX Redistributable (105MB Download)

Contains all the links back through for older DX versions so that if a older DX file is being looked for it will have a stub to tell it to continue.

Interesting...I installed that...uninstalled the game, it ran fine, installed the patch, I got the error again.  Uninstalled the game, and reinstalled, with no patch, it runs fine.  I wonder what the patch does that breaks it?

TBH at this stage I wouldn't worry that much :)

True, I guess I'll just run it without the patch.  Thanks for all your help.

Well, so much for that.  Everything goes fine right up until the race actually starts...then there is no sound.  There is sound all the way up to that point, just not during the race.  I give up!

Last time you gave up we got it to run :)
Will try loading it onto a Win 7 test box and see how I get on.
May be a while though - not likely to get to it before the weekend, and I live right next to Silverstone ...

What soundcard are you using?
From the in-game sound menu try turning off 3D sound and any EAX options & see if you get sounds during the race.

Author

Commented:
It is a standard Sound Blaster Live card.  I have all the options turned off.  The funny thing is, the sound is perfect....right up until the cars are on the grid...then, no sound.

Can't reproduce this :( On my Win 7 test box (with SB Live!) it runs (and patches) with no problem.

I think it must be the particular combination of hardware/software I have.  I tried again to uninstall everything and start from scratch, and still the same.  Thank you so much for all your help with this, your approach to troubleshooting was excellent.  I appreciate all your help.
