We are using a special software to generate a automatic asset list, but in some computers the information that I receive (Using WMI and DCOM) is overwrited because the "Service Tag" is the same (All PC are oem computers with Windows XP)

How Can I change the "Service Tag"?

Check the motherboard manufacturer's website (or contact them directly) to see if they have a utility to do it.
Could you provide more info?  What kind of oem computer, what path in WMI you are querying to find the Service Tag, etc...

The PC are OEM (A lot of them with ASUS Motherboard) not DELL  , then I understand that the "Service Tag" is a parameter located inside the motherboard, isn't it? Is in the BIOS?

Do you need a special software or utility to change it?

Commented:
That's correct; the value is stored in BIOS on the motherboard.  The IdentifyingNumber property of the Win32_ComputerSystemProduct class in WMI is read-only.  I don't know of any way to change the value through Windows without a special utility.

I'm not sure if Asus provides such a program.  A quick search of their website didn't turn one up.  You might try emailing their technical support.

You need to check with the manufacturer of the motherboard. The service TAG goes into the EPROM and you should be able to change it.

Either you need to know low level system programming or use a utility that the manufactureres use to do this as well.

Asus tell me that there are some utilitys to change it, but not know the name??????

Is a incredible answer, but is the only that I can get from asus...
You may want to look at the BIOS maker instead. Check with Award, Pheonix, etc... whichever it is. It is possible that they may have a utility to change or set it since they would also provide the utility to update the BIOS.

I try this way talking with the bios manufacturer but until now nobody can help me...

The best place to check would be with the BIOS manufactufacturers. Within WMI, what parameter are you getting the value from.... like serial number or service tag etc.

I know that Dell has an Asset tag utility to change the service tag to match the chassis service tag in case of a replacement of motherboard when failed.

With dell computers we haven't got problems, I know the utility, the problem is with any computer not dell...

Finally, the Service Tag is a DMI field that you can edit using dmicfg.exe bios utility
