Hello Experts,

I have Dell Poweredge 2650 server which only have CD port and I wanted to install Windows server 2008 , but when I connected a external Portable DVD the BIOS doesn't recognize to reboot from it. I did chat with Dell Technician but guy was just reading some manual and answering :).

Is there any way I can get it to work? BIOS update would help? Technician told it will not make any difference. Any utility?

Thanks for your time.

Are you plugging the drive into the front panel of the server by any chance?  I have noticed that on my 2850 the from panel USB's only seem to support the mouse and keyboard.

Try the USB's at the rear.

Dell 2650 I believe aren't USB 2.0 which is most likely causing the problem.

I don't think Dell 2650 even supports Windows 2008 server as well. Last time I looked Dell have not released drivers that support Windows 2008 server on Dell 2650s

If Dell has release drivers you can install a USB 2.0 PCI card.

The 2650 cannot boot to USB devices - even with a BIOS update.  You can try one of two things:

Install 2008 over the network using PXE/WDS.

Use Dell's System Build and Update Utility (SBUU) CD from the Drivers and Downloads page of the Support Site.  Boot to this CD, answer the installation questions, then when it prompts for the OS DVD, then you may be able to use your USB drive to load the OS from (because you are not actually booting to it using this method.

2008 (32-bit only, as 2650's do not have x64-capable processors) is supported on the 2650.  The trick is getting it installed :)  You could also buy a DVD drive for it.

Hi,
Does anyone know how I can make the ISO bootable CD for Dell System and Build utility? I tried using magic ISO but it says it can make only CD bootable with 300MB data for the trial version. Is there any other way or software which I can use to make the bootable CD from ISO file for  size around 635 MB?

Thanks

The ISO is already bootable.  You just need a CD burning program that can burn the ISO image.  You can use CDBurnerXP on any Windows OS or use the integrated Burn Image/CD option in Windows 7 when you right-click on the ISO.

PowerEdgeTech: Thanks a lot :), I got it to cd now.

One thing , Can I copy the 32 bit window server 2008 files to a hard drive,Connect Hard drive to server , run this cd and when it asks for boot , just boot from this external hard drive? I also wanted to format the whole system before I install 2008. I hope while rebooting from HD it will give me option to format the whole system? Or I can format the whole system before that, is there any other way? Sorry, Don't know much about Systems, I think I am still learning :)

Thanks for your help. Have a good day.

The 2650 will not boot to USB devices, but once you have already booted to SBUU, you "might" (long shot, but you might) be able to get SBUU to use those files, but I doubt it.  But, when you use the SBUU CD, it will automatically format the entire drive when you do any install.  There will be no sign of any previous OS or data after the install using SBUU.  If you were loading 2008 directly from the Windows DVD, then you would have the option, but not with SBUU.

That did not work :(. I booted to this Dell utility CD and went to OS Server installation, It asked me to choose the OS I want to install and only following were listed. Window server 2000 SP 3, 2000 SP4 , Redhat linux . I could not see any option to boot from USB drive either. I will need to swap the DVD Drive from other server :(

You should be using the latest SBUU 5.5 - anything else doesn't work at all with 2008.

I ran 5.5 and was able to choose the window server 2008, once preinstallation thing was done it asked for restart , I retstarted and Plugged in a DVD ROM, it doesn't recognize it :(. I tried to plug in Hard drive in front USB port. it does not recognize it either. This is crazy. I have almost spent my day figuring it out.
I tried back USB port too. No luck. It says NO DVD ROM device is available on your device. Plug in a USB DVD ROM deive and you may need to reboot it. But when I plug it in and reboot same message pops up. Any suggestions?

I installed 2003 and then upgraded it to 2008. I got it upgraded instead of frsh install. That should work.

But I am unable to ping this server from the network. Does anyone know I can configre this server?
When I do ipconfig/all. . I don't see the Ethernet Adapter Boradcom Netxtreme Gigabit Ethernet Adapter. While installing 2008 I got the message that you may not be able to use gigbit ethernet feature on this system. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thanks
