Blinking light on laptop ac adapter

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CR220E. The light on the ac adapter glows bright and then dim. When it is dim the icon that shows the power condition switches to battery power, when it is bright then the icon shows it is back on ac. With the adapter not plugged into the Vaio the light glows brightly. Has anybody seen this before?

Sounds like a bad power adapter. They are switching power supplies so if the power drain get to great then the light goes dim.

Is there any way to test it?

No.  It may indicate an unusual (and large) oscillating power draw by a failing component in the Vaio.  I would call Sony Support ASAP.

Is this the power adapter that came with the laptop?

On your laptop what does the DC say for in? 16v? 19v?

What is the output of the power adapter?

I don't know if this is the original adapter. 16v. My meter is at home.
If you look on the adapter see if it tells you the output. It should say something in DC, 18v, 19v.

The adapter says 16v but the laptop doesn't show the voltage. I can only assume this adapter is for this pc.
Commented:
That laptop needs a 19.5V adapter.

I wasn't seeing the voltage on the bottom of the Vaio. When I looked again this morning there it was. 19.5v. the adapter says it is "for Sony Vaio Laptops various models" but it most definitely is 3.5v to low for the Vaio.

I talked to the owner and apparently this is the third adapter. When they got this on the Vaio was already in trouble. She will be buying a new adapter.
