acer aspire am5640...darn sound!!!

This is the most troublesome XP install I've ever done. Acer does not want XP on this PC for some reason, and to get as far as I've got, you have to download the drivers from Acer's taiwan support,  http://twsupport.acer.com.tw/driver2.asp

I had to use nlite to integrate into XP setup to find the hard drive.

As far as I know this PC is done except for the darn sound!! I've spent so much time trying to get the sound to work.

The funny thing is, even if you disable the integrated sound within the BIOS, and try to use a PCI sound card it doesn't work either.

It just seems to me all the time I've spent w/ the sound the motherboard just has its problems.

I've included a zip file of pictures so you can see different screens about the sound.

As far as I know, the PC doesn't think there are speakers on the PC; at least it seems that way. I've got working external speakers hooked to the PC but the PC doesn't think they are there, which I think is why I can't try to listen to sounds within the control panel.

I reset & updated the BIOS but no difference

One thing I'm not too clearn of are some of the sound settings in the BIOS. There is a simple disable to get rid of the integrated sounds but there are also different ways to enable the sound; deals w/ codecs

The options, if I remember right, are internal codec, external + internal codecs, but it would seem to me as much time as i've spen trying to get this working I'd have tried all the combinations.

I may just have to tell this person to buy USB sound if sounds is a must have; doesn't seem internal sound integrated or not will not work.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

When I run the installs of the different drivers I've download I get the error that's in the setupfail picture.

It just seems weird that there isn't anything dealing w/ sound in the device manager that shows a problem unless you double click the legacy audio device, which tells you the drivers aren't installed.

If the drivers weren't installed, wouldn't there be a question mark beside the device? Oh well, when you click the driver tab on the device that says there is no driver installed, and try to click the update driver tab nothing ever happens.

I'll have to try to install one of the soundblaster PCI cards again to see what error happens, but if my memory is somewhat correct, it was something that involved the motherboard as the problem.
normally in the device manager, if you expand the sound, video and game controller tab you should find your audio device there. if not, you might find it under the 'other devices tab'.

if its there then right click and select update driver.

you said when you click on the legacy audio device nothing happens, since your device is branded, (acer) does acer still provide support for your model of acer?

i'll try looking for audio drivers that might work with your model.
this is a fix i found for another model of acer, but i thought it might help you.

I would have never thought of and didn't know if UAA busdriver. I downloaded it and installed it, re booted PC, but still doesn't have the sound going for whatever reason.

The device in device manager that doesn't have a driver installed has these stats associated with it.....Location 65535 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus)

I did a search and it seems that is a realtek driver, and I downloaded it off the link, but for whatever reason when I run the install it says I need to install the busdriver. As far as I know I've installed the bus driver, and included is a picture of add/remove programs that I believe show the bus driver is installed.

What's weird to me is that in device manager there is no question mark around the item that you manually have to click through and find that has no device driver installed; however, if you go to that device and say upgrade driver, the box where you point to where the driver is never comes up?? I have no idea why.

Another weird part of this is something I'm not sure of, but it seems there could be to audio devices in this PC. On the back of the PC there are actually 6 holes where you can plug audio stuff in; headphones, mic. I never recall seeing 6 holes, or whatever exact name they may go by, for a sound device; usually just 3 holes.

On top of this PC thare are 4 USB ports, and beside the USB ports there are 2 more audio plug in jacks; pink & green and have pictures beside them for microphone & headphones.

I've plugged the speakers I have into all the audio holes w/ no luck.

I've included a picture that shows when you click on the sounds & audio devices in the control panel the screen is brought up that says there is no audio device, which doesn't allow me to test or try any of the sounds within the sound scheme.

However, there are 6 sound devices within device manager, and one of the 6 is the device that says no driver is installed, which I think is the reason this problem is going on....where the heack to get the drivers I don't know...I've tried so many different ones

I've downloaded the trial version of lavasys, and I've included 2 screen shots of lavasys saying what this device is.

I do believe this PC has an nvidia chipset, so I somewhat wouldn't think realtek drivers would help?

It would seem downloading and installing the drivers for this nvidia chipset, which I've done, would come up w/ the drivers for the sound...no

here's the other pic

I used pcidatabase.com to identify this device, picture included, but I've downloaded the drivers, ran the install but no luck

There's also another picture in here from lavasys, and this is why it seems to me somehow/someway there are 2 audio devices in here

try this to identify the devices :

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information.
Now select  "Components" and highlight "Problem Devices".
All hardware devices with a driver problem will be listed here.
Make a note of the first line of the PNP Device ID line of the entry. It will show a Vendor number and a Device number (VENxxxxDEVxxxx) both four digits long.
Look up those numbers here:   http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php
It does have an SPDIF on the back of the PC. I'm not sure, but would you have to get some kind of adapter to use "regular" speakers?

As the BIOS says for this PC there are options for the sounds, internal & external codec or internal only

I'm not sure if this has something to do w/ the SPDIF port?

Thanks
I'd just check inside the case & see if there's a small cable running off the graphics card into an SPDIF port on the motherboard.
There is an SPDIF running from the SPDIF port on back of the PC to the motherboard, but I'm not sure if it's running of the video card. The video is integrated in this PC.

Hopefully disconnecting the SPDIF from the motherboard may let regular speakers work. As many times that I've messed around in the BIOS, I can't say I remember a setting to disable the SPDIF; hopefully there is one
Well I never did actually get the sound going, but the person I was working no this for didn't seem to care too much.

I advised him to get a pair of SPDIF speakers to try for the sound.

Thanks for your time & help
