Remote Restart Dell PowerEdge 2950
Hi
I was remotely restarting this poweredge after applying some patches and it didnt restart.
Is there a way we can restart this through WOL etc?
I tried Dameware NT utilities and WOL GUI by depicus
None of the tools are working.

I got the mac address from arp-a
WOL is enabled (I think..)
DRAC is installed and not configured.
its not resolving \\servername
this was the DNS (SBS server)
I am remotely logged in through another workstation in the network and trying out tests.
This server is 30 miles away.
Any other ideas lee ?

Any server that is primarily administered remotely should have a remote access card installed. Whether the vendor calls it "lights out" or "DRAC" or some other acronym, you need something that is OS independent. If you have no such device installed in your server, you'll need to gain local access to see what has happened.

DRAC is installed but not setup.

Probably some service stopped responding while shutting down and now you have to manually visit the site where the server is located and reset power.
It is advisable for remote servers to use a special hardware, so you can act in a situation that the server is not responding. for DELL it's the following:

Your DELL Server supports the Remote Access Controller (DRAC 5) - is there one installed?

This is a remote office.
This being a long weekend in East coast people are usually away on vacation.
will start making calls in about 4/5 hrs.

do you have any other server located in that location. in the same subnet?
Then try connecting to the server or use these tools from that.

I am actually logged into another windows 20003 server in the same subnet and trying to use WOLGUI by depicus / Dameware NT utilities
I got the mac address from arp -a and tried sending the magic packet - but still cant ping it.
Till now i am done with 2/3 tools and no luck.
Lee @ you may be right :-(

Are you using the APC Power bars sort of things where you can restart the server, otherwise I'm afraid that you have to coordinate with the NOC people only to help you out.

yep APC
I am trying to figure out how to remotely start the server using APC SUA 2200

hey guys its 3:30 AM here.
I will try again in the morning and test out the ideas from EE - otherwise call the customer to start the server.
At this point I think options are limited to manual start -- only.

I often find that if a server isn't going to come back up, it's hung on shutting down. Can you still ping it? If so, try this from a workstation command prompt (with admin access) -
shutdown -r -f -m \\servername
The -f will cause it to force any running programs to close.
Otherwise, unless you have a DRAC card installed and configured, your only choice it to power it down by hand.
