mondoarchive not writing to tape

Recently I've found the tape ejected and mondoarchive reporting
 [Main] libmondo-stream.c->insist_on_this_tape_number
It tries about 40 times incrementing the number. The drive is onlne and appears OK
Mondoarchive has been running happily for a year until now.

buffer: cannot open output file: Input/output error

When the tape drive goes quiet, please insert volume 73 in this series.

Too many tapes. Man, you need to use nfs!

1) reboot
2) Check any other log files for issues

 I hope this helps !

Thanks, I've done that. I suspect the drive may be faulty. It's only 18 months old and cost over £1000 so I'm peeved if it is.
I've found drive test utilities for windows but not for linux. It's an external scsi ultrium 448 attached to rhel5
can you plug it into a windows machine for testing ?

The only suitable scsi controller is in the linux box. There is a windows pdc and another 2003 server but I need to shut everything down and stop the business while messing around. The linux server provides their main network share.  A linux test utility would let me test the drive without upsetting anyone.

Tapes load in the drive and the lights appear OK - after a while, it seems to take some time before the lights settle down, or it ejects the tape and reloads it.  The drive  just does not seem to be writing. They have lost the cleaning tape I provided but the cleaning led is not on.

After my last 3 tapes refused to be written, I finally made the move to disc backup. A 1TB mechanical USB drive now costs less than $A100, 40% the cost per GB of a tape cartridge. And there's no troublesome expensive tape drive involved. Really, it's worth thinking about
Although it was not initially obvious, the tape drive is faulty. I've sent it to HP under warranty.
