I would like to enable STP on our core switches. They are 5412zl with one of them doing the routing for all VLANS. I have yet to configure a trunk on these switches however I would like to know which command to run on both switches to ensure STP is on.

show spanning-tree

First plan rooot and secondary bridge, lower numbers will 'win'
like :
core_1(config)# span prio 0
core_2(config)# span prio 1


then to enable:
config
span

spanning-tree legacy-path-cost
spanning-tree priority 2 force-version stp-compatible

I have not configured core_1 ??

I would use a lower priority on the switch that you want to be the root.
