Can you take the code from a Joomla Template and its modular layout, copy a "generic" version of the pages code and paste the code in when you need the same kind of page layout. If so how?

Is there a way to take a template like Solar Sentinal and within the module layout
¿ Create a modular layout that consist of a several selections below see image
§ Using the modules framed in RED.
§ They would fall into position when posted. Sliding & stacking accordingly.
¿ Have it copied and pasted somehow in the code (I assume CSS?)
¿ Create a new page with all the modules ready for content and image placement?
¿  Then content can be copied and pasted quickly and easily.
¿ If this can be done ?
If so can someone help me with the steps, tools we should use (like Dreamweaver I assume. unless there are better ones?).......or could you give an example of some kind.

Any support in this area is greatly appreciated. Thank you.!

Hi,

First don't use Dreamweaver beacause when saving it's add unwanted code and cause more issue.
You can use free Notepad++ this will do the job and this is free http://notepad-plus-plus.org

I don't really understand what you want or need to do...?

First what you need to know is in the module section (Joomla admin backend) you can choose on which page you want module X appear. let say you may want that the login module appear only on certain page, Joomla allow to select this easily.

Maybe this template is a little to heavy for your needs, you can use a fantastic application that make very nice template called Artisteer http://www.artisteer.com/?p=joomla_templates

There is plenty of CSS and template tutorial but honestly this is not easy to setup the first time

Lenamtl,

Thanks for your response.

What I am attempting to achieve is a uniform layout of the hi lighted module positions (above) so that we can have the modules already there and only need to input different content from page to page.

Regards
let say Module News that display news of the day placed on user4 position on home page and you want same module News that display other news on Aboutus page

 or

You want news on User4 position on home page and login module on user4 on aboutus page

You can achieve both situation, which situation is yours?

If it is the same module you can duplicate the module / copy the module so the same module can display different content. (this is an option available in Joomla).

but if this is different modules, so user4 can be a place holder for different modules depending of the page.

Neither of those are mys issue.

What I am saying is that I want the same module type (i.e. Custom HTML) with the same 'title' on multiple pages where I can edit the content and have different content on each page. but yes, I want the module to be in the same place on several pages just different content in each module on separate pages. For example, the 'Cheese' module on Page A contains the text 'cheddar' and the 'cheese' module on Page B contains the text 'swiss'

if the SAME module is on 2 pages but has DIFFERENT content - then you actually need to use 2 different / separate modules and assign each to the page/menu item that you want it to appear on.

You can BTW go to yoursite.com/administrator........login and go to extensions module manager - check teh box next to a module and click on COPY (top right) to duplicate a module - that you can then change and assign to teh required page etc

Hmm is that what you are trtying to do?

PS: Many modules can have teh same name - so they 'look' like teh same mdoule but are in fact unique

We were thinking we could layout all the modules we wanted on a page with generic category headings and a generic sentence in each module as a place holder. Then find a way to copy the code for that generic page layout. Then go back and fill in the page with real content images and links changing the categories and text. Then simply go back in the code and paste the original "Generic code once again." I am finding there are several report development companies that have software that want me to promote and sell for them so we needed a rather generic page that we could slap down and fill in the blanks.

What we were hoping is that we would not have to go into module mgr NEW Custom Module figure out the name we want and the stuff we want in it. We thought it would be more efficient to have a generic page of of previously built modules that we could copy then go back and then just fill in content for each module on that page.

I figured it would be a copy out of the CSS and move down the code on the CSS page and simply paste and it would miraculously show up. That is what I thought.. Is this not possible.?

Here is an example we wanted to lay out a Series of Modules ready to be filled in.

step 1. - We were thinking we could go into the code where this page would be (assuming we would be copying CSS code out of Dreamweaver or something and grab the code for this is a "Basic Product Page"

Step 2. - Then we would go into the modules and have premade html content images links etc and just past it in and change the Module title in Joomla and save. Then when that is done.......

Step 3. - Then we would figure out how to paste a copy of the same code now it would be unique as the content from before would have been changed to new module titles just prior to this in step two. The images you see in the screen shot below would be created over and over and someone behind me another developer would be changing the content and pasting behind me the real stuff that goes in there for every new product we sell. It was the only way we could figure out how to do it efficiently? Instead of inserting 12 modules one at a time we were thinking we could drop the whole page in a once and be done. I hope we can.? Please advise.

Hi,

Sorry for not understanding your needs.

Joomla is a CMS so you can create category, section for content, then publish it this is the basic way to do it, no need extra code. There are content, module, component, plugin and template. So when we talked about module, we mean extra snippet that interact with content and sometime not like login snippet, countdown etc. There are plenty of already made component on Joomla site.

When we need more option like you seem to have, you can check existing component and adapt them or use some module that allow to use custom code. For this you need some HTML PHP Javascript and CSS knowledge.

I can recommend some modules I use to display custom code in content or in a module.
Here is the list: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/core-enhancements/embed-a-include

Also take a look in core enhancemenst section that might help you
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/core-enhancements

Other solution, there is some package for vertical marquet that have interesting modules, you can adapt those for your needs.

To my opinion when to much custom code is requiered I code my own application and don't use CMS.

You can take a look to expressionengine that might be more suitable for your needs, because they have a very cool and easy template system.

Seems to me the easiest would be to click the button to look at the raw html code in your sample generic version, then copy/paste it into some text editer - even Notepad. When you want a new page, create it, click to see the raw html, then open the generic in Notepad, copy/paste it in.

I realize this requires using something other than Joomla, but it reeks of simplicity in my mind!

The problem with my mind is that "it could never be simple" and it usually is simple. That is what I was thinking actually some kind of code CSS or HTML etc but did not know how to do it or what tool to use. The hard thing for me would be finding just the exact code for page layout with the generic content then figuring out just where to drop it in either between, in front of or behind other pages.

Thanks for all your help and wisdom. You guys change peoples lives. Maybe we can keep America and the world alive and flourishing with hard work and knowledge. I had assumed you could take a generic page that consists of the entire page in your original post, not just the red outlines, and when you make a new page, change just the parts you want different - Showcase, Left, Right, User, etc. But, if you are wanting to have just the parts outlined in red as a single stand alone template, then add outer columns to individual pages, so that the layout of the new page is totally different except for the parts outlined in red, you are looking at a NON simple task, that may be beyond the scope of the help we can give here. Perhaps, in the wysiwyg view of the html editor, you can hightlight the individual parts outlined in red, then paste them into a new template page. But, then when you start adding the other parts of the page, it may not flow together like you want. Sorry I can't give you more.
