Hi guys
I have a windows server 2008 ENT running Hyper V. I have obtained a VL key and now apparently need to setup a KMS server. Is there an easy way to set these up?
Cheers

Hi
I tried both these solutions but got no joy. The 2nd option using the cmd prompt gave me the error "Activating Windows Server(R), ServerEnterprise edition (c99b641f-c4ea-4e63-bec3-
5ed2ccd0f357) ...
Error: 0xC004C008 The activation server determined that the specified product ke
y could not be used"
Any ideas?
Cheers

Are you getting this error message when trying to activate the key on a workstation? Also, what version of windows are your clients using?

Using on a Windows server 2008 Ent

Followed up the error and it looks like -

Error code 0xC004C008
Symptom
When you try to use KMS to activate one or more computers, you may receive the following error message:
0xC004C008
The activation server determined that the specified product key could not be used.
Cause
This issue may occur if the KMS key has exceeded the activation limit. KMS keys will activate up to 10 times on six different computers.
Well it appears that there is an issue with your key. I would double check the key and re-enter it just in case you missed a character accidentally, if you still get the same error I would contact microsoft and see what they are saying about the key. They will be able to tell if it has reached the limit of times it can be used.

KMS servers are very easy to setup.  You can run the command slmgr -dli to see what key your system says is installed.

Make sure that you are using a KMS Host key and NOT a KMS Client key.

If it still won't work then I would do as others have said and contact Microsoft.

Have you installed and attempted to activate the key via command prompt?

To do so use the following commands:
To install a KMS host on a Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 computer

1.      Log on to the computer that will serve as the KMS host.

2.      Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

3.      To install your KMS key, type the following at the command prompt, and then press Enter:
cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk <KmsKey>

4.      Activate the KMS host with Microsoft® using one of the following:

a.      For online activation, type the following at the command prompt and then press Enter:
cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato

b.      For telephone activation, type the following at the command prompt and then press Enter:
slui.exe 4

5.      After activation is complete, restart the Software Licensing Service using the Service application

Thanks for your help guys but apparently we needed a MAK key and not a KMS key so all is sorted now.
