I've a remote client with a windows server 2008 R2.

When booting he gets a black screen.  When using RDP he gets a black screen. I can connect to the server using logmein and I get a black screen.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks but not likely to be the problem.  Besides I can't apply the patch as I can't login.
Do you see anything when it reboos, or just a solid black screen?

I'm working remotely so couldn't say I'm afraid.  I don't think there's any scans taking place as the boot process seems to complete as via logmein Pro I can access the event logs and processes etc.  All looks good except for this black screen when trying to login.  We don't even get an ALT, CTRL, DEL option

Were updates installed before the last reboot?
Can you access the services remotely via mmc?

Can you access the registry remotely?

(It has the sound of the screen saver being locked...)

Sorry yes updates were also installed recently
Try disabling windows screen saver in the registry and reboot to see if this helps

I have been stuck in this loop after updates were installed. How long has it been stuck at this black screen? Have you tried to reboot the machine using shutdown -i ?
The problem it seems was a corrupt xmllite.dll file.  I've replaced it and rebooted and that's brought the server back up.

Bonkers.....!
