Exchange 2010 backup issue

All,

I have having a serious issue where a Full metal backup of our exchange server is taking over 3-4 days to complete a consistency check before actually starting the backup.

It appears that the logs are not being truncated from what I have already researched. What would cause this? We are using the Built in backup application with VSS

I have have looked into circular logging to help with this, I understand the issues but would it enable the backups to be done regularly and without this consistency check running for days beforehand?

If I turned on the circular logging, could I remove the older logs from the system since at the minute a up to date backup isn't happening?.

Many Thanks

Hi,
I experience same problem.

From my perspective following will help you to resolve,

1. Check if you have enabled or active data being written in database.
2.  Hope you are taking Full VSS backup
3. Check the error logs generated in event viewer.

Good advise is to have full backup once a week and incremental everyday depending on database size.

Enabling Circular logging will not delete logs immediately provided there are data waiting to be written. In some cases it can clear after restarting Exchange IS store service. You may also need to Dismount and mount database.

For my case i had enabled Circualr logging and restarted server for patch installation & it had cleared all Logs.

Yes, all is good here

Yep VSS backups are being done

3. Check the error logs generated in event viewer.

I am seeing nothing in the event log that would show an error

"For my case i had enabled Circualr logging and restarted server for patch installation & it had cleared all Logs."

I have have to do this just to get the server back on track.

Thank you
