Outlook and AD lookup query

Hi All

I had a query about Outlook and AD lookups I was hoping someone could help with.

When Outlook speaks to a Domain Controller for lookups (either LDAP or GC), what port does it use? 389 or 3268? Or does it depend on the sort of query?

Any query that uses the GC is going to use 3268 and for other LDAP queries it will use 389.

This is actually something that  you could see if you install wireshark or netmon on a workstation and just watch the traffic.  Fun thing to do and good for learning.

Thanks

Thanks Mike.

So for instance if Outlook was querying the GAL, that would be on 3268?

It has to first find a GC so it talks to the DC through port 389 then to the GC for lookups using 3268.

This may actually be a good future blog entry for me (showing it via wireshark)

Thanks

Thanks guys... Just one more question, if Outlook was trying to carry out a GAL lookup, is that ALWAYS a GC lookup?
