Problems syncing iPhone/iPad to VMware Guest
I have had a problem for about a year now and have not been able to find a solution.  I have two iPhone 3GS phones. an iPod Touch and an iPad.  The iPhones/iPod are running 3.12.  The iPad is running 3.20.  All four devices are in fact jail-broken. (Before someone says that is the problem, I have done FULL restores on the phones and immediately had the exact same problem, so no, that isnt it).  My host computer is a Dell i7 based workstation with 12GB RAM running Windows Vista 64-Bit.  I am running VMware workstation 6.5 (I have tried different versions of VMware as well).  My guest OS is Windows Vista Ultimate 32-Bit.  I am running iTunes 9.2 on the guest (I have tried different versions of iTunes as well).  Essentially when the VM is active I can attach the Apple device via USB and it is recognized.  I can browse the pictures folder, etc.  I launch iTunes and it verifies the device and it appears.  If I try to do something small like sync 1 app or a couple songs it works just fine.  However anything longer - syncing more then a half dozen songs, more than 3-4 apps, doing a backup, trying to upgrade the device, etc. iTunes will just freeze.  It is 100% repeatable.  I have two workstations (setup in an identical manner) and this happens on both machines with all three Apple devices (the VM is on an external USB drive).  I have tried this on a brand new, clean install of Windows Vista 32-bit as a guest, no luck.  I have turned off all anti-virus/anti-malware/firewall apps on the guest and host.  No luck.

Any ideas?

Since I travel for work and have two workstations at home a several laptops, my goal was to build a dedicated "iTunes" VM and always sync all devices to that, since you can only sync an Apple device with 1 copy of Itunes at a time without over-writing the entire device.

Ok.  I see that you have reinstalled the guest OS.  When you reinstalled iTunes, did you use the same downloaded version?  Or did you download a "fresh" download of iTunes.

One thing you could try (since you've reinstalled the OS) is to download a previous version of iTunes.  9.1, 9.0.
http://oldapps.com/itunes.php

I actually downloaded a new file since the version had changed in between the two builds.  I also just upgraded VMware Workstation to 7.1 (since posting this) with no change.

Ok. This may create some work. But have you tried to take a backup of you iphone, restore it with your 3.x OS, re-jailbreak using spirit (or your tool of choice), and a re-sync?

IF you try this, make sure you have your shsh blobs saved with cydia.

Thank you for the suggestion.  I have performed those steps and it has not helped.  However, two things I should add:

1) I have multiple Apple devices - ALL of them (even the iPad when it first came out of the box) had this problem - NONE of them will backup or sync in a VMware Workstation Guest.

2) When I launch iTunes on the HOST computer (not in a VMware Workstation Guest) all of the devices - jailbroken and otherwise, can backup and sync perfectly everytime.

Since the only difference between working and not working is VMware versus no VMware, I do not believe it is specific to a particular iPhone.

I am not all that familiar with VMware, but if you have multiple VMs running at the same time, one of them might be hijacking the usb port from the one you are trying to sync from.  You might look at the USB settings if there are any.

If the only reason for doing this is so you can sync music from multiple computers, you can do this by using manual mode.  If you just want to sync music from one computer and the calendar from another computer, you can do this also.  On the itunes where you just want to sync the calendar, it will ask you something about replacing the music or something, just click cancel and it will sync just the calendar or whatever.

agileblowfish: I have this issue even when only running a single virtual guest machine.  The "reason" for this process is that I have multiple iDevices that all sync to a single iTunes instance.  I have a VMware guest machine that I built for this purpose - nothing else is intended to go on this VM.  I carry this VM on an external 2.5" USB drive.  I work at several offices and have a workstation at each.  Since I carry all of my VM's with me, I just launch them wherever I happen to be and they are exactly as I expect them to be.  I can obviously do this without an Internet connection (required for most similar solutions to this problem).  Hope that explains the "why" I was hoping this worked....

At this point in time I have upgraded VMware Workstation to the newest available version (7.1.3) and iTunes to the newest (10.1.1.4) running on Windows 7 64-Bit fully patched up and still have this problem with all of my iDevices (iPhone 4 at 4.2.1, iPhone 3GS at 4.2, iPad and 4.2.1, iPod Touch at 3.1.2, OLD iPod).  I have called VMware and they say it is a known Apple problem.  I have gone to the Apple (and I laugh hard at this one) Genius Bar and am told that it is a known VMware problem.  Instead of VMware I have started to carry around a very small laptop and just sync these devices with iTunes installed on the native OS.  This is not what I wanted to do...but hey, it works perfectly everytime.
