VMware ESX - Cah't SSH & no local console response

Hi,

I have just install VMware ESX for testing and I have downloaded the VSphere client. I was able to successfully connect to the ESX server using the client.

I can't seem to ssh to the machine, I get an error "Network Error" connection refused.
After some reading, I have discovered that by default the root acccount can't logi nvia ssh so I have been trying to access to console while physically at the machine using "ALT+F1" and also ALT+F11 with no success.

When I press ATL+F1 I can see something like this:

ESXi 4.0 http://www.vmware.com
Copyright etc.....
_

There is a blinking cursor there but i get no response from my keyboard.

Any suggestions?

Well, you seem to provide 2 different statements in your question.
The question states that you are using ESX while the sentence below shows ESXi.
Please note that SSH is disabled by default on ESXi and enabled on ESX, although ssh root login is disabled unless explicitly enabled.

Correction -

I am runnign ESXi
You can use RemoteCLI, PowerCLI or vMA to manage the ESXi Host.
There is no need to enable ssh on the ESXi Host.

ESXi... that is the reason you do not have a console.  The whole selling point of esxi is the lack of a console, the security and patching issues that are related to a console.
