VPN Connection with WM 6.1 PPTP

Hello,

for a customer i want to activate exchange server active sync with wm 6.1 device over vpn pptp.
on the wm device: the vpn works and i can ping the vpn and exchange server (it's the same) with ip adress and cannot ping with the servername, and i cannot
access the homepage of the server with the wm device (http://172.16.96.2/exchange).
If i make the vpn connection with a windows pc all works. i can ping with servername and i can access the server homepage.

if i try to connect another exchange server over vpn all works. (with the wm device)

does anyone have an opinion?

Best regards

joerg

Now I am a step further. The ping with full qualified name with servername is functional. but when
i will try to connect via http or will try exchange sync the connection will drop. in the system event
there is event 20194 remoteaccess The reason for disconnecting was user request.
I need help.

Thanks joerg

Activesync works over HTTPS or HTTP if you choose not to use SSL.
Using VPN will not make Activesync work and I would seriously question why you are even trying to use VPN to connect to your Exchange Server with a Windows Mobile device.
Activesync is the answer you need - make sure that works and forget about VPN - it is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike!
What version of Exchange does the customer have and what is your issue getting Activesync working?
Not sure, why ActiveSync should not work via VPN, I used this for several Handys with WM 6.1 and 6.5 with IPSec.
The reason is just because of different types of connections. I use PC Sync, WLAN Sync and remote at the same time, this way you need no cahnges for server addresses, depended of being inside or outside the network.

What I experienced several times is, that I had to change the Active Sync server settings for my exchange, currently I use the NetBios name, but it worked before with the FQDN and then stopped this way from one minute to the next. So you may try to uses the NetBios or FQDN of the Exchnage server, dependedn on which setting will work localy.

But ActiveSync has to work in general of couse, before it can work via VPN.
What version of Exchange are you using?

Thanks for your answers. It is Exchange 2003 SP2. We are using VPN, because the customer will not open http for all. The problem is, that the mobile device will drop the VPN connection, when it tries to c0nnect the server over http or try to sync with active sync. If it try another server via vpn to connect all works. I am looking for the reason, with the vpn connection drop after http://server/exchange.

To get Activesync working, you don't need HTTP open only HTTPS if you use a secure certificate.

So they will open TCP port 1723 but not HTTPS?  That is crazy.

So you have to create and connect to VPN now just to get your email.

Please have a read of my Exchange 2003 / Activesync article.  Activesync is used the world over and is totally secure.
