How to make a Atmega128 programmable

Recently a few STK600-Atmega128RFA1 http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=4677 was given to me. Now I'd like to experiment with getting a couple of LEDS hooked up to each, and have them communicate over zigbee.

I'm a programmer however, and now little about hardware beyond Desktop PCs. I recognize the 6 empty JTAG "slots" but know little of how to handle them. I assume I will need to buy more hardware to make it work.

So my question is this, what do I need to buy and read to get able to interface with the chip?
