Hard drive disappeared

I was copying about 350 gigs from a hard drive in my computer to a larger drive in a sata dock attached via usb. Everything was going fine. Then the transfer was interrupted with an error message which unfortunately I do not remember. The gist of the message was that something could not be copied. "skip" was one of the options. I checked skip and immediately the transfer abruptly ended and the hard drive. "G" in my computer from which I was copying disappeared. It disappeared from "Computer" and Windows Explorer and from the HDD list on computer management / storage in the control panel.

I tried system restore and from a restore point and the image the system created, neither of which worked. The failed restore returned this error message System restore failed to replace the file (C:Windows) with it's original copy from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during system restore, (0x8007/a90).

My machine is custom built. The operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Other than the missing HDD everything else seems normal.

What can I do? There was a lot of data on that disk which I need.

I would check out the drive for failure.  Connect it up to another machine and make sure it still works properly.

in device manager, I am showing 8 drives. There are 6 in the computer and 3 externals. The scan attempted to install a driver but failed.
lets find out what's failing, it should have a yellow mark on something - usb?

it may be the drivers are installing fine but the drive itself is now toast - can you plug it into another computer and see if it comes up?

try a different connector cable (ide, usb, etc whatever it is) just in case

Remove the drive from the dock and connect it directly (internally) to a PC, then check if the BIOS sees it,and if yes, if the OS sees it. Possibly the dock has broken.

The one in the dock is OK. It's the one in the machine with all the data that is giving the problem. Right now I have removed the G drive and am waiting the the machine to restart. It is taking far to long.

This expert was the fustest with the mostest. The questioned drive is now alive, well and functioning.
Byron 440 came up with the solution. I removed the questioned drive from the computer and restarted the machine. While it was running, just for grins, I removed the target drive from the dock, inserted G (the problem drive) it grabbed a driver and identified itself as G. So I shut down, reinstalled the disk and all is functioning normally. Byron is my hero of the day.
