google android sorts contacts by first name, I want to sort by last name

Mikal613 is correct.  Seems that the "new generation" wants to list based on first name and not last or to do a search.

Took me awhile to get use to it, but after a few months I found that it was just as easy to look at first name as it was for last.

IIRC there is an add on application (costs money) that allows you do do this, but I'm not one for spending money if I can easily adapt/learn.

You could put the last name in the first name position if you insist on getting a last name sort.

Could you not write an app that would resort the contacts in any way you specify?
