optical out from tv to receiver help
Hi.
I am hoping there are some experts out there that can assist me in figuring out my issue with a Home Theater Setup.
I have a new Sony Bravia LCD KDL46EX700, and I have it hooked up via hmdi (video 1) to my directtv receiver. I have a Harman Kardon AVR135 Receiver. I have an optical output from my tv and put it into my optical input in the back of my receiver, however whenever I switch "Video 1" to optical in the settings it won't register the new input signal. However, if I take the exact same output from the tv and plug it into the front of the receiver (optical "3" as noted on the front panel), it works and I can get the sound from my television through my home sound system. This is not ideal, though. I would like it to work in the back of the receiver, and not have this big ugly cord going into the front of my audio equipment.
Any help is appreciated!

I,m not sure, I would have to see what your doing, but it sounds to me like you should be conecting the audio out from you,re t.v. to your reciever.

There is only one optical on my tv, and receiver.
I will try again, tonight, but I am able to select "optical" for video 1, but it doesn't work. It only seems to work when using video 3, which I don't get.

You use "Video 1" twice, but I assume that you are using a directtv receiver directly to your TV in the first partand NOT using your receiver.
Something seems not to be right either you have a setting wrong or a problem with output or input. To cut down on issues I would suggest to first plug something else into your Video 1 optical of your receiver to make sure that is working at all. Once you get sound from it do not change the settings on the receiver, leave it like it is. Then change over optical connections to the TV. Now if this does not work you know that you can focus on the TV.
I am not aware of different optical signals on a Sony, but in the setting you might need to enable the optical output.
Also if your directtv receiver has a HDMI output is should also have an optical out.

Why are you trying to go from the TV to the receiver at all?
All of your video can/should be run from the DTV box to your AVR to your TV over HDMI.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Unless the optical is turned off when HDMI is used.

I don't have HDMI input in my receiver. But I do have HDMI and Optical out on my DVR. I saw a post somewhere that you should go from the source. I am going to try that later today. String from the DVR optical to my Receiver optical.

After plugging in the optical into my directtv dvr and connecting it to my receiver, I continue to get the "UNLOCK" message when switching the audio setting on video 1 to optical.
My directtv dvr audio setting is set to send out audio at "dolby digital"
Any ideas?

In looking more closely at my receiver, I have three optical outputs. A optical1, optical2, and I assume the one not labelled is optical3. After linking up video1 to optical1 ---- booyah! It worked like a charm. Just a simple, yet frustrating oversight.
It sounds good so far! Can't wait to hook up the Beatles Rockband to this, then again, that is analog Wii. Boo.
