Windows 2008 server - black screen with mouse cursor only

Hi there.
I have problem with one installation of windows 2008 server Enterprise with Active Directory and  Hyper-V virtualization on it.
When the OS starts  it boots all the way to the logon screen, but when it's time for the logon screen to pop-up, nothing happens. There is only one black screen with mouse cursor which is possible to move arround. There is no ping to the machine, it is impossible to invoke Task Manager, no Remote Desktop, no connecteion to the VMs too. I rebooted the machine multiple times without effect. Tried the SF /SCANNNOW  - it stopped on 97 %. I can access the machine in Safe mode , Safe mode with networking and Safe mode with command prompt. When i try Directory Service Restore Mode - black screen, white mouse cursor.

P.S. I apologize for the english ...
Thanks in advance

I saw a trooble that seems to be the same as your:

Windows 2008 Server Logon Hang
http://www.drowningintechnicaldebt.com/GregTate/archive/2010/04/20/windows-2008-server-logon-hang.aspx

1.Boot Into SafeMode
2.Open Registry Editor
3.Navigate to HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP and create the following Multi-string value: DependOnService
4.Double click the new DependOnService value that you created
5.Enter CRYPTSVC in the Value Data field and click OK
6.Reboot Server in normal Mode

Did you check the logs while you were in safe mode? It may give you a clue as to what is going on

About the logs: I can not open the Event Viewer, it tells me that it doesn't work under Safe Mode

zelia, you can create a WinPE and boot into your windows and then now read the log file..
The answer should be in there.

There is one error. It says: The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control. After that, there are several informational log for some services that has been stopped The windows modules installer service entered the stopped state; The Network Store Interface Service service entered the stopped state; The Event Log service was stopped; The certificate propagation service entered the stopped state. ( These were in System events )

You could try removing the Hyper-V role while in Safe Mode re-boot and see if that makes a difference. If you are running Virtual machines make sure none of them have snapshots, if they do remove them save your machines and shut them down. You will be able to use the VHD files later when you re-create your Hyper-V installation.
If re-boot after removal of Hyper-V Role is successfull check your system for other errors then if all is good re-add the hyper-V role.

Hyper-V doesn't run under safe mode. Server role manager too.

If server role manager does not run under which I have not tested try disabling the Hyper-V Services or you could try safemode with command prompt and type servermanagercmd -remove hyper-v from the command prompt

Hyper-V is Disabled now, still no login screen ... I do not want to remove it like a service, because the thing gonna get messy.

Please check your logs again and see what errors you have in the system and application logs

You mean after disabling the Hyper-V Service ? Because from the moment the black screen appeared to this moment, the Event Viewer  did not log any event.

Btw after 50 - 60 minutes the server restarts itself, i think that may be there is a service failing to start, but without Event Viewer working i can't tell for sure

you should be able to look at the services in safe mode to see if there is something set to automatic that is stopped

I think that it is normal to have many services that are not started under Safe Mode.

Is it possible this problem to have any connection with WinLogon.exe or GINA ?

I am not entirely sure as we really do not have enough information to go on.
Are you running AntiVirus Protection? If so you may want to disable it to make sure that isn't causing any of the issues.

This may be realated:
A black screen is displayed and then the system stops responding when you log on to a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972904
Read it over carefully and make sure it applies to you

This may be realated: http://projectdream.org/wordpress/2009/03/03/windows-server-2008-and-the-black-screen-of-waiting/

This may not help because it referrs to after you hit ctrl+alt+Del: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906510

Also take a look here. I hope something here helps you.

You could also try booting to WinPE and running SFC/SCANNOW  against the server.

At first, thanks for the links.  I already read them but they do not apply.  There is no Antivirus protection software installed.

Here are a couple thoughts:
Is there any 3rd party software installed
If there were issues with winlogin or Gina you would probably see something in the event logs
What was the last thing you did to this server before it started having this issue?
Do you have any Backups?
If this is not yet in production maybe a re-install is in order.
You mentioned AD installed would you be able to move the AD roles to another AD server then demote this machine in SafeMode?
Also does the server actually have Network connectivity if you do safe mode with networking?
Depending on your answers here this may be a good for Microsoft Support as it is obviously a software issue.

You are welcome I was going to tell you to try a windows repair from booting from the CD and realized that Windows 7 actually has an interface that allows you to fix the system files (System File Checker) kind of a Restore but I realized that Server did not have this option so I did not suggest it. and asked you some other questions.
But I am glad you were able to solve the issue should be minimal things to fine tune. A re-install would have been a last resort.
